Indian Muslim Organizations Aghast Over Mirwaiz’s House Detention

The heads of various leading Indian Muslim organizations and educational institutions have strongy condemned the government for imposing restrictions on the political, religious, and social activities of Hurriyat  Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by placing him under house detention since February 9.

“The government has placed Mirwaiz under house arrest in Delhi and later at his Nageen residence soon after Afzal Guru was martyred by the Indian authorities at Tihar Jail on Feb 9,” a spokesman of Hurriyat (M)said in a statement.

He said that the leading figures who denounced the restrictions laid on the activities of Mirwaiz include head of Darul-uloom Deoband, Moulana Mohammad Salim, General Secretary of All India Muslim personal Law Board, Moulana Syed Mohammad Wali, head of Dar-u-uloom Lucknow, Syed Mohammad Hassan nadvi and Shahi Imam of Delhi’s main Jamia Mashid, Moulana Syed Ahmad Bukhari.

According to statement, the prominent religious figures have jointly expressed concern and denounced the government sponsored restrictions laid on the social, political and religious activities of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir.

The luminaries have also condemned the overall repression on Kashmiris by the government. They said imposing curfews and laying restrictions on activities of Kashmiris was unacceptable and unjustifiable. They said that the government has violated the basic human rights and religious freedom of people and leaders.

The prominent Muslim figures stressed upon the government to immediately lift the restrictions laid on the activities of the Mirwaiz and demanded the release of Hurriyat leaders and hundreds of Kashmiri youth who have been incarcerated by the authorities in jails and police stations.

The further demanded that the government should restore the basic human rights of Kashmiris with immediate effect, adding, government should desist from violating the basic social, religious and political rights of Kashmiris in the future.
