SRINAGAR: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, on Sunday urged people to install fire extinguishers and insure their properties to prevent losses from fire incidents.
His remarks came during a visit to Sonamarg, where a massive fire destroyed shops worth crores on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, Div Com Bidhuri, assured that the administration would extend all possible help to affected shopkeepers and business owners.
“I urge all establishments to take preventive measures and opt for insurance. No one could have predicted this disaster two days ago. Fire acts like an enemy, and we must take precautions to minimise its impact,” he said.
The fire caused significant financial losses, but fortunately, no lives were lost due to the quick response of local residents and authorities.
Div Com Bidhuri informed that land has been identified for a Fire and Emergency Service Station in Sonamarg to strengthen fire safety measures. “As an interim step, two fire tenders will be stationed at Z-Morh and near the Youth Hostel for a swift response to emergencies,” he added.
He further stated that relief measures for affected shopkeepers are being planned, and discussions with market associations have been held.
“We have assured them of all possible assistance to help them resume their normal lives at the earliest,” he said. (KNO)
