Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz Hours After US Ceasefire, Cites Israeli Strikes in Lebanon

SRINAGAR: Less than 24 hours after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire with Iran, the Islamic Republic has shut the Strait of Hormuz in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanon, the Associated Press reported.

The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most critical maritime chokepoint, a narrow 21-mile-wide artery connecting the Persian Gulf to the open ocean, through which over 20 percent of global oil and natural gas passes daily. Situated between Iran and Oman, this heavily militarized, volatile waterway functions as a global economic pressure valve; its vulnerability to disruption or blockade by Iran could trigger catastrophic, instantaneous spikes in global energy prices and supply chain chaos.

According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, Tehran has halted the movement of oil tankers through the crucial maritime route following Israel’s strikes in Lebanon.

Fars reported that two oil tankers were allowed to pass through the strait earlier in the day after the ceasefire between Iran and the United States came into effect.

“Simultaneous with Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz has been stopped,” the agency said.
