SRINAGAR: Iranian wrestler Hamid stole the spotlight at the annual Dangal held at the revered shrine of Pir Baba Faiz Bakhsh Bukhari in Gurha Brahmana, Akhnoor, defeating Punjab’s Chhota Saddam in the main Ist Malia bout. The contest, carrying a prize of Rs 1.50 lakh, was the highlight of the day, drawing thunderous applause from the massive crowd as Hamid’s skill and endurance prevailed in a closely fought encounter.
The second high-stakes clash, also worth Rs 1.50 lakh, witnessed Abhinayak of Uttar Pradesh overcoming Delhi’s Chirag in an electrifying bout that kept spectators on their feet. Another major highlight came when Lovepreet of Khanna overpowered Ballu from Maharashtra, clinching the Rs 1 lakh prize with a commanding performance.
More than 100 bouts unfolded over the course of the day, giving fans a rich display of power, technique, and traditional sporting spirit. The event not only celebrated top-tier wrestling talent but also reinforced the deep cultural roots of Dangal in the region, where such gatherings are as much about heritage and unity as they are about sport.
The festival was organised under the leadership of Chairman Yashpal Sharma, with active contributions from Sarpanch Shamsher Singh, Ravi Singh, Ratan Lal Sharma, Parveen Sharma, Ammu Chib, Shunna Chib, and several others, ensuring a vibrant and smooth conduct of one of Akhnoor’s most cherished traditions.
