SRINAGAR

Day after army expressed concern over the re-appearance of Islamic State flag during street protests and clashes, the IS flag again surfaced on Friday during a demonstration in old city of Srinagar, witnesses said.

The witnesses told GNS that soon after Friday prayers; youth gathered outside historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta and started pro-freedom and anti-India sloganeering. The youths, many of whom were masked, also raised slogans in favour of IS and other Jihadist groups.

“The protesters were holding Islamic State flag and one of the protesters waved IS flag after climbing mosque’s gate,” an eyewitness

The development comes just a day after General-officer-Commanding (GoC) 15 Corps, Lt General Subrata Saha termed the presence of IS flag during protests and clashes after Eid prayers this week a concern “…This is something which merits the highest concern of all security agencies and let me tell you that it is getting the attention of all the security agencies,” he had said.

The top army commander had said the appearance of flag is worrisome. “Certainly, we are watching and indeed closely monitoring the situation as it were. It merits and it is getting the highest concern,” he added.

The IS flag made debut in Kashmir when Israel pounded Gaza in July this year. During an anti-Israel protest, the youth waved IS flags outside Jamia Masjid in Old City. The flag was later seen in almost every anti-India and anti-Israel protest that erupted in Old City.

Besides, the flag, so far has so far surfaced in Lal Chowk, Sopore town and reportedly in Islamabad.
