SRINAGAR: Barkah Hussain, an undergraduate student of Computer Science and Technology at the Islamic University of Science and Technology, Kashmir, has been named one of the two global recipients of the Obada Prize 2024 in the undergraduate and postgraduate category. She is the only undergraduate selected this year.

The award, instituted in honour of Prof Abdel-Shafy Obada, recognises creative and interdisciplinary research across the world. At the ceremony, student winners receive a certificate, the Obada-Prize medal, and a document confirming the Obada-Prize amount, which functions as a waiver code for publication fees in the international journals of Natural Sciences Publishing.
Although still in the early stages of her academic career, Barkah has built a record of work in research related to water-disaster studies. She has delivered two poster presentations and won first prize at the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025. She has also presented at the ISPRS conference at IUST and at the Sixth Asian Conference on Geography held at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Her abstract has been accepted for the GISSuRF 2026 conference scheduled at VIT-AP, Vijayawada, in January 2026.
Barkah is also a member of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences. Her selection for the Obada Prize marks a notable achievement for IUST and reflects the rising research ambitions of young scholars in Kashmir.
