SRINAGAR

On the eve of prime minister’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir, the union minister for rural development Jairam Ramesh has written to the defense minister of India AK Antony and minister for civil aviation Ajit Singh for the withdrawing restrictions over the operation of night flights in Srinagar.

As per the letter, which is with Kashmir Life, Jairam Ramesh has written, “I am unable to understand why restrictions continue to be placed on airport operations. I hope these restrictions can be lifted soon. It will earn us considerable public goodwill.”

He has also written in the letter that the matter of night landing and take-off facilities at Srinagar airport was brought into the attention of Rahul Gandhi, on his recent visit to Valley on June 15, by the businessmen and tour operators.

Kashmir is witnessed a hugely successful tourist season and almost 30 flights land in Srinagar on daily basis. Since the nigh landing facility is missing, most of the flights land within six to seven hours which converts the Srinagar airport into a railway station.
