Jammu Kashmir: 100 Kanals of Abandoned Miran Sahib Factory Land to be Repurposed for Medicity

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has identified 100 kanals of land at the site of the abandoned Rosin and Turpentine Factory in Miran Sahib for the establishment of a Medicity. The information was shared by the government in a written response to a question by MLA Narinder Singh Raina regarding the prolonged non-utilisation of the strategic industrial site at Talli Morh.

The factory, originally established in the early 1980s and modernised in 1984 by Jammu Kashmir Industries Limited (JKI), has been non-operational since 2002. Officials attributed the decline of the unit to high operational expenditures, including manpower and maintenance costs, alongside a critical disruption in the supply of resin, its primary raw material, previously provided by the Forest Department.

To ensure the productive use of the valuable public land, the Administrative Council decided in December 2021 to repurpose the site under the aegis of the Directorate of Industries and Commerce, Jammu. Following this decision, 100 kanals of land were officially earmarked for the Medicity project.

The government has also initiated steps to clear the premises of obsolete infrastructure. This includes the auction and disposal of scrap, redundant machinery, and other materials through a competitive bidding process. The move is expected to pave the way for new economic development and healthcare infrastructure, addressing concerns over the long-standing wastage of the factory’s strategic location.
