SRINAGAR: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday said it has arrested an Assistant Engineer of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Works Department (PWD) after allegedly catching him red-handed while accepting a Rs 30,000 bribe for processing compensation related to a house damaged during a Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) road project in Doda district.
In a statement, a CBI spokesperson said the accused was serving as an Assistant Engineer with the PWD and was associated with the implementation of PMGSY works in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the spokesperson, the CBI registered the case on July 16, 2026, following a complaint alleging that the complainant’s house had been damaged during the construction of the Thathri–Kathawa PMGSY road project in Doda district, making the complainant eligible for compensation of approximately Rs 10 lakh.
The agency alleged that the accused demanded Rs 50,000 to process and release the compensation amount. Following negotiations, he allegedly agreed to accept Rs 30,000 from the complainant.
The spokesperson said the CBI laid a trap on July 16 and apprehended the accused while he was allegedly demanding and accepting the Rs 30,000 bribe
Further investigation into the case is underway.
