SRINAGAR: A total of 73,646 patients were awaiting kidney transplantation across India as of July 27, 2026, the Union Government informed the Lok Sabha on Friday, while data placed before Parliament showed that Jammu and Kashmir performed 223 kidney transplants between 2021 and 2025.
Replying to an unstarred question, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav said transplant hospitals are required under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994, to report data to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Registry (NOTTR) maintained by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).
According to the data, Jammu and Kashmir carried out 21 kidney transplants in 2021, 52 in 2022, 51 in 2023, 48 in 2024 and 51 in 2025, taking the five-year total to 223 transplants.
The ministry’s state-wise data on deaths among patients on the kidney transplant waiting list did not report any deaths from Jammu and Kashmir during the 2021-2025 period. Nationally, deaths while on the waiting list were reported from several States and Union Territories, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
The government acknowledged the shortage of donor organs and said it is implementing measures under the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP) to strengthen organ donation and transplantation services across the country.
To increase deceased organ donation, the Centre said the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, along with Regional and State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisations, conducts regular awareness campaigns through poster competitions, slogan-writing events, pledge drives and social media outreach. A 24×7 toll-free helpline (1800114770) is also operational to provide information, tele-counselling and coordination for organ donation.
The ministry informed Parliament that more than five lakh Aadhaar-verified organ donation pledges have been registered through the national organ donation portal.
The government further said it launched the year-long nationwide “Jug Jug Jiyo Abhiyaan” on August 3, 2026, to promote organ and tissue donation. On the same day, it also launched the upgraded e-Pratyaaropan digital platform to digitise organ donation and transplantation processes, improve transparency and facilitate access for patients awaiting transplants.
