Mukhtiyar, a resident of Beli Charana and a member of the Armed Police 12th Battalion in Srinagar, was detained following a search operation conducted by a police team under Vijay Thakur, Incharge of the GMCH police post, in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. The search revealed 15 grams of heroin and Rs 9,000 in cash, prompting his immediate suspension and arrest under FIR number 155/2024 at Bakshi Nagar Police Station for violating the NDPS Act.

Police officials report that Mukhtiyar is allegedly part of a broader drug syndicate operating within Jammu, suspected of preying on local youth and contributing to incidents of drug overdose.

This incident marks the second arrest of a police officer linked to drug trafficking this month; on November 7, another constable, Perwaiz Iqbal, and his two wives were apprehended in Janipur with 33 grams of heroin. Iqbal was part of the Crime Branch in Jammu. Police have since launched a financial probe into both officers’ assets, aiming to identify and potentially seize property acquired through illegal drug proceeds.

These arrests come amid a crackdown on narcotics as police intensify efforts to dismantle drug networks across the region. Superintendent of Police (SP) Brijesh Sharma and SDPO City West Dr Satish Bhardwaj, who recently received the Home Minister’s Medal for investigation excellence, are supervising the ongoing probes. Bhardwaj’s zero-tolerance approach has led to three major FIRs against police personnel involved in drug peddling this week alone.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration had dismissed five police officials in August for connections with militant organisations and involvement in narco-terror syndicates.
