SRINAGAR: The Centre has set a target of constructing or upgrading 1,084 kilometres of rural roads, building 44 bridges, and providing all-weather road connectivity to 227 habitations in Jammu and Kashmir under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) during the 2026-27 financial year.
The details were shared by the Ministry of Rural Development in a written reply to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
According to the ministry, the implementation plan for 2026-27 focuses on the timely completion of ongoing PMGSY works, sanctioning new projects under PMGSY-IV, strengthening maintenance of existing roads through the Electronic Maintenance of Rural Roads (eMARG) platform, and ensuring quality through a three-tier monitoring mechanism. Nationally, the government has fixed a target of completing 26,474 km of rural roads, 1,375 bridges and connecting 2,400 eligible habitations during the current financial year.
The ministry said PMGSY-IV, launched in September 2024, aims to provide all-weather road connectivity to 25,000 unconnected habitations by 2029. It also noted that PMGSY-I has already connected 1,62,876 habitations across the country and has been closed for fresh sanctions, though pending works can be completed until March 31, 2027.
For Jammu and Kashmir, the Centre has allocated Rs 980 crore under PMGSY for 2026-27, with a mother sanction of Rs 490 crore and Rs 167.85 crore released so far.
The ministry further said Jammu and Kashmir, along with Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the northeastern states, follows a 90:10 Centre-State funding pattern under PMGSY, while road projects in remote and difficult regions are given priority under the scheme’s guidelines.
