SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir received Rs 1.27 crore in funds released by the Union Government under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Development of Wildlife Habitats during 2024-25 and 2025-26 for measures including the management of human-wildlife conflict, official data placed before the Lok Sabha shows.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change released Rs 73.97 lakh in 2024-25 and Rs 53.15 lakh in 2025-26 to Jammu and Kashmir under the scheme, taking the two-year total to Rs 1.27 crore.
The figures were provided by Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh in a written reply to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 3505 on the capturing of violent wild animals.
The Centre said wildlife management and mitigation of human-wildlife conflict are primarily the responsibility of the concerned States and Union Territories, which act as the first responders to conflict situations and maintain records of incidents and species involved.
Under the Centrally Sponsored umbrella scheme Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats, financial assistance is provided for measures including the capture and relocation of problematic wild animals, infrastructure for translocated animals, monitoring and driving away such animals, compensation for loss of human life and damage to crops and property, insurance coverage, public awareness and capacity-building of Forest Department personnel.
The Ministry, however, did not provide a Jammu and Kashmir-specific figure in its reply on the number of wild animals captured, translocated or otherwise dealt with during the period.
The Government said Section 11(1)(a) of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, empowers the Chief Wild Life Wardens of States and Union Territories to permit the capture or translocation of Schedule-I wild animals that have become dangerous to human life. The related data is maintained by the respective States and UTs.
At the national level, the Centre has also launched the ‘Tiger Outside Tiger Reserves’ scheme with an outlay of Rs 88.7 crore to mitigate adverse human-tiger interactions. It has further approved a Regional Action Plan for Elephant Conservation for southern States and established a Centre of Excellence for Human-Wildlife Conflict Management at the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), WII–South India Centre, Coimbatore.
The Ministry said these measures have strengthened prevention and management of human-wildlife conflict through evidence-based and technology-enabled approaches.
Separately, the Centre released Rs 2,900 crore in 2024-25 and Rs 1,585.19 crore in 2025-26 under the Project Tiger and Elephant component of the scheme to States covered by the programme. Jammu and Kashmir did not figure among the recipients under this component in either year.
