SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has introduced its first skiing training programme at Sonamarg, aiming to establish it as a winter sports destination.
Minister for Science & Technology, Information Technology, Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma, inaugurated the programme, which includes training for schoolboys from various institutions across Kashmir. The initiative is expected to boost tourism and provide structured training for aspiring athletes.
Sharma said that the government is committed to developing winter sports infrastructure in Sonamarg and ensuring that training meets international standards. He also announced plans to make the event an annual feature every February and confirmed that a Winter Carnival will soon be held in Sonamarg, featuring cultural programs and winter sports activities.

District Development Commissioner Jatin Kishore highlighted the programme’s potential to boost winter tourism and provide opportunities for the local community. Director General YS&S, Rajinder Singh Tara, said that the initiative was launched under the guidance of the Chief Minister and called for investment in infrastructure to make Sonamarg a regular winter sports hub like Gulmarg.
