SRINAGAR: The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has issued a formal notification appointing Shantmanu (Retd) as the State Election Commissioner for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the order released by the General Administration Department from the Civil Secretariat, the appointment has been made under Section 36A of the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, read with a prior notification dated February 17, 2026.
The notification specifies that Shantmanu will serve a tenure of five years from the date he assumes office or until he attains the age of 67 years, whichever comes earlier. The terms also allow for resignation addressed to the Lieutenant Governor or removal in accordance with Section 36B of the Act.
On compensation, the order states that the State Election Commissioner will receive a salary equivalent to the last pay drawn at the time of retirement, adjusted against pension benefits, along with applicable dearness allowance.
The notification further clarifies that allowances and facilities—including travel, residential accommodation, medical benefits, leave, and telephone charges—will be provided on par with those admissible at the time of his retirement from previous service.
