SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has 2,053 functional Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS) registered on the Union Government’s Milk Supply Review Dashboard, while Ladakh has 11, according to data placed before the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
The figures, based on the National Cooperative Database accessed on July 17, 2026, put Jammu and Kashmir among the larger contributors to the national dairy cooperative network, while Ladakh remains among the Union Territories with the smallest number of functional societies. JK’s 2,053 societies account for about 1.7 per cent of the national total, while Ladakh’s 11 account for less than 0.01 per cent.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said a total of 1,19,839 active Dairy Cooperative Societies, including 24,097 Multipurpose Dairy Cooperative Societies (MDCS), had been registered on the newly created dashboard.
Within Jammu and Kashmir, Pulwama had the highest number of functional dairy cooperative societies at 270, followed by Baramulla with 248, Jammu with 216, Budgam with 173, Kulgam with 171, Shopian with 164 and Anantnag with 160. Srinagar had 21, while Doda had four, the lowest among the districts listed.
In Ladakh, Kargil accounted for 10 functional societies and Leh Ladakh one.
Jammu and Kashmir’s total of 2,053 societies was higher than Himachal Pradesh’s 1,167, Assam’s 1,230, Kerala’s 3,347 and Haryana’s 2,463, but below Punjab’s 5,346, Madhya Pradesh’s 6,401, Uttar Pradesh’s 7,658, Bihar’s 10,807, Rajasthan’s 13,196, Maharashtra’s 12,544 and Gujarat’s 15,897.
Karnataka recorded the highest State-wise total at 16,851, followed by Gujarat with 15,897 and Rajasthan with 13,196. Among the States and UTs listed, JK ranked below the national leaders but above several States in terms of functional dairy cooperative societies.
The Ministry said concessional financing under the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF), with three per cent interest subvention, had mobilised private investment of Rs 30,938 crore across the animal husbandry and dairy sectors. Of this, Rs 21,312.62 crore was invested in the dairy sector.
On doorstep veterinary care, the Ministry said 4,019 Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs) were operational across the country under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme. The reply did not provide a separate number of operational MVUs for Jammu and Kashmir or Ladakh.
The Government said farmers can access MVU services by calling the toll-free number 1962. Call centres staffed by executives and veterinarians assist farmers and, where required, deploy mobile units to provide veterinary services at their doorstep.
The Ministry said MVUs are monitored and evaluated through review meetings, State visits and assessments of State Action Plans. National Level Monitors and third-party agencies also evaluate their performance on parameters including funds utilised, farmers benefited and the number of animals treated.
For comparison, Madhya Pradesh had 406 operational MVUs, including 10 in the Gwalior Lok Sabha constituency, which was specifically referred to in the parliamentary question.
The Union Government said there is currently no proposal for a new action plan to further strengthen mobile veterinary services or the dairy cooperative network. Existing measures under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme and other schemes will continue to support livestock owners and the dairy sector.
