SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has 295 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, according to data shared by the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries in the Rajya Sabha.
Replying to an unstarred question in the Upper House on Friday, Minister of State for Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma said that a total of 52,718 EV charging stations had been installed across the country as of July 29, 2026, based on information received from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
According to the state-wise data placed before Parliament, Jammu and Kashmir has 295 charging stations, while neighbouring Ladakh has 25. Delhi has 2,370 charging stations, Punjab 1,548, Haryana 2,291 and Himachal Pradesh 256. Maharashtra tops the list with 6,985 stations, followed by Karnataka with 6,805.
The minister said the Centre does not maintain a centralised record classifying charging stations into fast and slow chargers.
He also informed the House that setting up EV charging stations is an unlicensed activity, allowing private players to establish charging infrastructure in accordance with the Ministry of Power’s guidelines issued on September 17, 2024. Under the FAME-II scheme, charging infrastructure has been installed through public sector oil marketing companies and other government entities, while under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, ministries, central public sector enterprises, states and Union Territories can submit proposals for EV charging infrastructure.
The reply came in response to a question seeking details of EV charging stations installed across states and Union Territories during the past five years and the agencies responsible for setting them up.
