SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has seven government medical colleges offering postgraduate (PG) medical courses across a range of specialities, the Centre has informed Parliament, while reiterating that the fee structure for such courses is determined by individual states and Union Territories.
In a written reply to a starred question in the Lok Sabha, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda said the Centre does not maintain a centralised database on the fee structure of PG medical courses, as the fixation of fees falls within the jurisdiction of the respective state and UT governments.
According to details furnished by the National Medical Commission (NMC), Jammu and Kashmir has seven government medical institutions offering postgraduate medical education. These are Government Medical Colleges at Anantnag, Baramulla, Kathua, Rajouri, Jammu and Srinagar, besides the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar.
The institutions collectively offer MD, MS and MCh programmes in disciplines including General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Anaesthesiology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Pathology, Radiology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Community Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Neurosurgery, Urology and Surgical Gastroenterology, among others.
The minister said the information was provided by the NMC as part of the government’s response on the availability of PG courses in government medical colleges across Union Territories.
