In an online safety advisory, the police highlighted common tactics used in cybercrime and encouraged people to verify suspicious communications before responding or sharing sensitive information.

The police outlined the SMART rule, which stands for Stop, Make Sure, Ask, Respect and Tell, as a reminder to remain vigilant while using digital platforms.

The advisory cautioned users against clicking unknown links promising prizes, responding uncritically to messages from unfamiliar accounts or sharing confidential information in response to urgent requests.

It also urged people to think carefully and verify the authenticity of online communications to reduce the risk of cyber fraud.

People who fall victim to cyber fraud have been advised to immediately call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or report the incident through the official portal, cybercrime.gov.in.

The advisory was shared as part of efforts to promote cyber safety and responsible online behaviour.
