SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have cautioned people against ClickFix cyberattacks, in which fraudsters use fake CAPTCHA prompts, browser error messages and bogus verification or software update pages to trick users into executing malicious commands.
According to the advisory, cybercriminals use deceptive messages such as “I’m not a robot”, “Click here to fix the issue” and “Install the latest update” to persuade users to follow instructions that could compromise their devices and expose them to cyber threats.
Other common tactics include fake account verification pages asking users to prove they are human or complete verification before accessing a service.
Users have been urged to exercise caution while browsing the internet and avoid clicking suspicious links or following instructions displayed on untrusted webpages. They should remain alert to unexpected verification requests, browser warnings and update notifications.
ClickFix attacks rely on social engineering to manipulate users into carrying out actions that can facilitate malicious activity, rather than relying solely on conventional malicious downloads.
The police have advised victims of cyber fraud to immediately call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or report the incident through the official portal, cybercrime.gov.in.
“Be aware, think before you click and stay safe” is the message conveyed in the advisory.
