SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have warned students and parents against cybercriminals using fake university admission messages to pressure victims into making payments or sharing sensitive personal information.

The advisory cautions that fraudsters may misuse university branding and lure students with claims of limited seats, urgent deadlines and short-term offers to create a sense of urgency.

Police highlighted several fake messages, including claims that only a limited number of seats were available, that admission had been confirmed and that fees had to be paid immediately. Other messages falsely claimed that an admission deadline had been extended and urged recipients to click a link and make a payment.

Students and parents have been advised to verify admission-related communications through the university’s official website and contact numbers before taking any action.

Police also urged people not to make payments under pressure and warned against sharing one-time passwords (OTPs), bank details, identity documents or login credentials.

The advisory further cautioned against clicking suspicious links or downloading unknown files and encouraged students to consult parents or mentors and report suspicious messages or calls.

“Real universities don’t create panic,” the advisory said, urging people to “Think, Verify, Stay Safe.”
