SRINAGAR: One soldier was killed on Saturday during an encounter that broke out between militants and security forces in the upper reaches of Doda district and adjoining Dudu Basantgarh area of Udhampur district on Friday late night.
Official sources said that a joint team of security forces had launched a search operation following specific intelligence inputs about militant presence in the region. As the team closed in, the hiding militants opened fire, triggering a fierce gunfight.
They said that during the exchange of fire, one soldier sustained critical injuries and later succumbed. Initial reports suggest that two to three militants remain trapped in the area. (KNC)
