SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Tuesday disclosed that tens of thousands of vacancies exist across departments in both gazetted and non-gazetted cadres, even as a portion of these posts has been referred to recruiting agencies for filling.
In a reply to Starred Assembly Question tabled by MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para during the ongoing Budget Session of the Legislative Assembly, the government said that 959 gazetted posts and 6,340 non-gazetted posts were referred to the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) and Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB), respectively, during the year 2025.
The data placed before the House indicates that under the direct recruitment quota, 3,808 gazetted posts and 24,507 non-gazetted posts have been identified as vacant across departments. Similarly, under the promotion quota, 6,409 gazetted and 24,451 non-gazetted posts remain unfilled.
District-wise figures further reveal that 2,798 gazetted and 16,812 non-gazetted posts are vacant under the direct quota alone, pointing to significant staffing gaps at the grassroots level.
The government stated that detailed department-wise and district-wise break-ups of these vacancies have been compiled and appended as annexures to the official reply.
While the administration has initiated the process of filling some posts through referrals to recruitment agencies, the figures underscore the scale of vacancies across sectors, raising concerns over manpower shortages in public service delivery across the Union Territory.
