SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Protection Department has advised birdwatchers, wildlife photographers and visitors against sharing exact locations, GPS coordinates or other identifiable details of migratory bird congregations on social media.
The advisory was issued by the Office of the Range Officer, Lakes Range Hokersar, Wetlands Division, Srinagar, ahead of the seasonal arrival of migratory birds in Kashmir’s wetlands.
The department said responsible wildlife photography and social-media posts can promote awareness about Kashmir’s avian diversity and the ecological importance of wetlands. However, it cautioned that publicly sharing precise locations of bird congregations and sensitive habitats could expose them to poachers, hunters and others involved in illegal wildlife activities.
Kashmir’s wetland network serves as feeding and resting grounds for migratory birds during their seasonal movements, with large congregations expected during the coming season.
The department urged wildlife enthusiasts and visitors to exercise caution while documenting sightings and posting them online, particularly when photographs or accompanying information could disclose the precise location of large bird gatherings.
The advisory comes during Wildlife Week, being observed from October 2 to 8, which focuses on awareness and protection of wildlife and habitats, including Kashmir’s wetlands and their seasonal bird populations.
