SRINAGAR: Jammu and Srinagar have completed nearly all projects sanctioned under the Centre’s Smart Cities Mission, with 282 of the 288 projects worth more than Rs 6,500 crore finished, according to information tabled in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said Jammu was allotted 127 projects worth Rs 2,969 crore, of which 125 projects valued at Rs 2,940 crore have been completed. Srinagar was sanctioned 161 projects worth Rs 3,634 crore, and 157 projects costing Rs 3,532 crore have been completed. The figures are based on reports submitted by States and Union Territories as of March 31, 2026.
The ministry informed Parliament that, nationally, 8,064 projects worth Rs 1,64,811 crore were taken up under the Smart Cities Mission, of which 7,790 projects valued at Rs 1,56,257 crore had been completed by the end of March this year. It also said Integrated Command and Control Centres have been established in all 100 Smart Cities.
Replying to a starred question, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal said an evaluation by NITI Aayog found that the mission had achieved a 93 per cent project completion rate and had contributed to improvements in urban mobility, safety, liveability and environmental outcomes. The assessment also noted the completion of Integrated Command and Control Centres across all Smart Cities.
The ministry said the Smart Cities Mission concluded on March 31, 2025. It added that after the mission ended, States and Union Territories were advised to ensure timely completion of pending projects and prepare operation and maintenance plans for the assets created.
The government also clarified that there is no proposal under consideration to expand the Smart Cities Mission. However, it said States and Union Territories could use the governance practices, planning models and technological interventions developed under the programme to improve urban infrastructure in other cities.
