Passenger Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), private cars and Heavy Passenger Vehicles (HPVs), along with goods-carrying Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs), will be allowed to travel in both directions between Jammu and Srinagar.

The traffic authorities have advised motorists to maintain lane discipline and refrain from overtaking or driving on the wrong side, warning that such violations could lead to congestion. Traffic Control Units (TCUs) in Jammu and Srinagar will coordinate with their Ramban counterpart to monitor road conditions.

Reviewing traffic movement between November 3 and 4, the Traffic Police said vehicles experienced considerable delays on NH-44 because of single-lane passages and uneven road surfaces at Dawal in Udhampur and between Marog and Kishtwari Pather. The movement of four broken-down vehicles between Ramban and Nachlana, along with the passage of a nomadic herd between Banihal and Nachlana, further affected traffic.

Movement along the Marog-Kishtwari Pather stretch is likely to remain slow because of the continued movement of nomadic herds. Traffic is also being regulated at Dawal, where a stretch of approximately 30-40 metres has been reduced to a single lane.

The police have advised passengers and light motor vehicle operators to undertake journeys between Jammu and Srinagar during daylight hours and avoid night travel because of the risk of shooting stones and landslides, movement of nomadic herds towards the Valley and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal.

In view of the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) widening work along the Digdol-Khooni Nalla stretch, the movement of Kashmir-bound oil and gas tankers will remain restricted during daytime hours, between 7 am and 7 pm. The restriction is also linked to the prohibition on carrying inflammable material through tunnels.

Accordingly, tankers travelling towards Kashmir will be permitted beyond Chenani only between 5 pm and 5 am. Operators have been asked to plan their journeys accordingly.

Goods vehicle operators carrying fresh perishable commodities and livestock have been advised to follow advisories issued by the Traffic Police, particularly in view of the landslide and shooting-stone risks and construction work along the Ramban-Banihal section.

The police have also urged Heavy Motor Vehicle owners and operators to avoid overloading, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and carry sufficient fuel before starting their journeys. Motorists have been advised against unnecessary stoppages between Ramban and Banihal, particularly near vulnerable landslide and shooting-stone zones.

Traffic on other highways

Vehicles will be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil and Minamarg towards Srinagar until 1 pm.

Heavy Motor Vehicles will be permitted from Sonamarg towards Kargil between noon and 5 pm, after which no vehicle will be allowed to proceed. Motorists have been advised to carry and use anti-skid chains to improve tyre grip on slippery stretches.

Security Forces convoys using the SSG road have been asked to schedule their movement in a manner that does not disrupt civilian traffic.

On the Mughal Road (NH-701A), light motor vehicles followed by Heavy Motor Vehicles with a maximum of 10 tyres will be allowed to travel in both directions, subject to favourable weather, satisfactory road conditions and clearance from the road maintenance agency, GREF.

The Traffic Police have advised commuters to confirm the latest road status with the respective control rooms before embarking on their journeys.
