Chaotic scenes were witnessed during evening as hundreds of protesters came on road at Sidhra in Jammu against a demolition drive launched by the Jammu Development Authority (JDA).
People of the Sidhra area, had scuffles and clashes with the JDA officials who were carrying out demolition of the structures. Protestors came on roads and blocked the National Highway 1A protesting over demolition of their houses by the Jammu Development Authority officials.
According to eyewitnesses many houses and other establishments were demolished by the authority after launching a drive against “illegal structures” on Thursday. They said around 20 structures were being demolished by the JDA out of which many have been dismantled.
However, the locals alleged the authorities of demolishing legal structures which had been constructed 20 years back after getting due permission.
Meanwhile, senior NC leader and CAPD minister Choudhary Ramzan rushed to the spot along with officers from civil and police administration to take stock of the situation. They ordered on spot stoppage of the demolition drive as asked JDA officials to ascertain veracity of the legality of structures before demolishing them.
While speaking to a local news agency KNS, Choudhary Ramzan said he has asked the JDA authorities as to how structures having permission from the government have been demolished. He asked the JDA officials to come clear on the matter.
Ramzan was also accompanied by National Conference Provincial President Jammu, Devender Singh Rana, Director General of Police Ashok Prasad, IGP Jammu Dilbagh Singh and SSP Jammu. According to eyewitnesses, after intervention by the team, people pacified and the demolition drive was suspended. However, they said protests in the area still continue.
