SRINAGAR: A Jaish-e-Mohammad militant was killed in an encounter with counter insurgent forces in Kulgan district, police said.

A police spokesman said a cordon and search operation was launched in Pariwan village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district based on inputs about the presence of militants there.

“During the search operation, as the presence of the trapped militant got ascertained, he was given ample opportunities to surrender. However, he denied the surrender opportunities and instead fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” he said.

In the ensuing encounter, the militant identified as Babar Bhai a resident of Pakistan was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of the encounter, the spokesman said.

“As per police records, he was active in south Kashmir since 2018,” he said.

“One AK-47 rifle, one pistol and two grenades were recovered from the encounter site”, he added.

Earlier police said, one cop was killed and at least three personnel of the army and two civilians have also sustained injuries in the operation.

The slain police official has been identified as (selection grade) constable Rohit Chhib.
