The Irrigation and Flood Control Department is all set to go for hi-tech dredging of river Jhelum by handing over the project to a Kolkata based firm.

“We had invited tenders on national scale and this firm won the bid and work on dredging would be started within 15days,” AEE IF&C Sub-Division Sonawar, Nisar Ahmed said.

Kolkata based Reach India Limited, the officials said, shall start work within fifteen days.

The Jhelum dredging is Rs 399 crore project with 70% of the total fund being supported by Union government.

The department had received serious bashing after the devastating deluge of 2014 in which river Jhelum had breached at several places, raising serious concerns over the maintenance of its embankments.

The department is also carrying isolated dredging at places including Gopalpora, Soiteng, Gandwal, Padshahi Bagh and Shivpora.
