With an aim to improve the future and application of geography in the state, the department of geography and regional development of  Kashmir University (KU) today announced the launch of Jammu and Kashmir Geographers Association (JKGA) here  at  the valedictory function of the six-day seminar-cum-workshop on the ‘application of Remote sensing, GIS and GPS in Resource Management’.

During the workshop, the participants including the faculty members of PG department of geography of University of Kashmir, teachers of different colleges of valley and the research scholars announced the formation of  JK Geographers Association to  meet the challenges faced by the geographers from time to time, and help broaden the scope of the subject across the state.

Registrar University of Kashmir Prof ZA Reshi appreciated the department of geography for taking the big and fast leap of development at all academic fronts in a very short span of few years.

He said the department of geography is one of the developing departments in the varsity. “This department has grown before my eyes and the university authorities consider it as one of the best departments in the university,” he said.

 Asserting that KU has to be on the research mode Registrar asked the department faculty to lay more emphasis on the research. “The department should focus on doing more research in the subject according to the international standards and improve the periodicity and quality of Journals to get more recognition at the national and international level.” Prof Reshi told the faculty.

To take advantage of new technologies like GIS, GPS, Prof Reshi said the department should build on the latest technological developments around the world.  “The geographers, research scholars and students should apply these tools to research and be one with the new advancements going around the globe.” He also assured the department to provide all possible assistance to make these latest technologies available within the department. Prof Reshi added that the university authorities are always ready to help the department in providing the new technologies.
