Three players and chief coach of Kayaking and Canoeing from Jammu and Kashmir, who were playing for Indian team in the International Canoe Slalom Championship in Markkleeberg Germany from March 29 to April 01, 2013, returned Valley today.

DSC02979Waseem Ahmad and Irfan Ahmad of Srinagar and Showkat Ahmad Mir of J&K Police were the members of the Indian team.

It was for the first time that players from J&K represented India in Canoe slalom event. Eleven member, Indian team was led by a prominent Kayaking and Canoeing Chief Coach and Vice President of Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association Umar Rafiq.

As per a statement Canoe Slalom is an Olympic event and both Indian and Jammu and Kashmir Kayaking and Canoeing Association has started to give special attention and thrust to Canoe Slalom event so that Indian players can perform better in the International competition.

Notably, J&K hosted the first ever Canoe Slalom National Championship at River Sindh in Sonmarg in the year 2012 and players of Jammu and Kashmir won maximum number of medals in the championship. J&K team not only won the overall championship that time but four players got selected for the International championship. Pervaiz Ahmad of J&K Police had also qualified for the International Canoe Slalom championship but his passport was expired and he could not get the passport renewed in time.
