SRINAGAR: The Cyber Cell of Jammu and Kashmir Police saved Rs 84,484 after receiving a complaint about online financial fraud in North Kashmir’s Kupwara, officials said.
A police spokesperson in a statement said that the initial investigation revealed that the fraud was committed using a fake WhatsApp call. “The victim was instructed to submit school fees via PhonePe, following the directions of the fraudster.”
Utilising cyber tactics, the Cyber Cell Kupwara blocked the transactions, ensuring the amount was put on hold and ultimately saved.
The Cyber Cell of JK Police urged the public to remain vigilant against online fraud, avoid clicking on suspicious links or fake SMS credit messages, refrain from installing unauthorised apps, and avoid answering video calls from unknown numbers.
“The public is also advised to be cautious while sharing personal information online. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the National Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930 or via www.cybercrime.gov.in.”
