SRINAGAR: Residents of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and Meghalaya are exempted from the requirement of linking their PAN card with the Aadhaar card, as per the latest update.

However, individuals who were issued a PAN card on or before July 1, 2017, are still required to link it with their Aadhaar card. Failure to comply with this requirement by June 30, 2023, may result in a fine of Rs 1,000.

Additionally, the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961 state that non-residents are not obligated to link their Aadhaar and PAN cards. The linking requirement also does not apply to individuals who are 80 years of age or older, or those who were not citizens of India during the previous year.

However, it is important to note that individuals falling into any of the aforementioned categories who voluntarily choose to link their Aadhaar with PAN will still be subject to the fine imposed by the Income Tax Department.
