Media reports from Delhi Friday said that an Election Commission official has termed the Jammu and Kashmir situation “conducive for assembly elections”.

The Election Commission is likely to take a final call after visiting the state tomorrow.

Quoting sources the reports said that state officials have told Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi that the polls do not have to be deferred beyond December.

The ruling National Conference had said the polls should be deferred to next year, because of the recent floods that devastated large parts of the state.

A new government has to be in place in the state before January 19, when the six-year term of the assembly ends.
