SRINAGAR: J&K Students Association here today welcomed the appointment of Dr Nilofar Khan as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir.

In a statement issued here, the National Spokesperson of Association Nasir Khuehami congratulated Professor Khan on her new role and responsibility as the Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University. The entire association looks forward to working closely with her to improve the education system of Kashmir University.

He expressed hopes that the new Vice-Chancellor will deliver from the best of her capabilities, and experience and take the University to new heights and past glory. There are certain fundamental issues which need an immediate and stern address in order to make J&K’s highest seat of learning a world-class university. Among them nepotism and Favouritism is at the top of list, he added.

Khuehami said that students of the varsity are often exasperated by delayed exams and delayed results. This trend needs to be changed at the earliest. University should follow UGC guidelines on the admission process in letter and spirit. They should not run on the wishes and whims of professors, rather should be governed by law lock, stock and barrel.

Additional Spokesperson of Association Ummar Jamal hoped that University should develop a student-friendly ambience in the varsity so that students do not suffer at any cost. We urge and hope that positive mechanisms for delayed degrees, nepotism, high fee or for that matter anti-student policies will be addressed on merit.

The intake capacity of Habba Khatoon (H.K.) Girls Hostel and Rabia Basri (R.B.) Girls Hostel is 340 only and Mehboob-ul-Alam (M.A.) Boys Hostel and Maulana Anwar Shah (M.A.K.) Boys Hostel is 380 only. He hopes some new hostels are built inside the campus to increase the intake capacity so that students coming from far off places don’t suffer because of the non-availability of accommodations here in Srinagar city. The students pursuing integrated 5 year courses like BA.LL.B and IMBA, who are not provided hostel by the university for the entire five years, should be provided hostel from the first year only so that they don’t face any difficulty. We hope that she will do well at this position and will develop Kashmir University into a premier institution of learning, knowledge and academic excellence, Umar added further.

Meanwhile, J&K Students Association thanked Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha who is the chancellor of the University of Kashmir for appointing Prof Nilofar Khan who is a distinguished academician with more than 30 years of teaching experience as the first woman Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir under section 12.
