Police on Tuesday detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik in Srinagar to prevent him from carrying out an election boycott campaign, the party spokesman said.

He said that a police party raided the Abi Guzar office of Malik and detained him.

The spokesman said that Malik along with other leaders was planning to start a sustained election boycott campaign.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Muhammad Yasin Malik have called a boycott of upcoming civic polls in the state.

Municipal elections are scheduled from October 8 in four phases in Jammu and Kashmir.
