SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Thursday observed a “Black Day” and held a protest in Srinagar against the treatment of senior Congress leaders during a demonstration in Delhi a day earlier.
Congress workers gathered at the party headquarters and attempted to take out a march on the main road, but police and CRPF personnel prevented them from proceeding. The protesters carried placards and raised slogans targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Srinagar Congress district president Adil Farooq said the protest was organised in opposition to what the party described as an attack on democratic institutions and the treatment of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in Delhi.
Addressing reporters, Farooq accused the Modi-led government of undermining democracy and said the Congress had decided to observe the day as a mark of protest and solidarity with its national leadership.
He also called for the resignation of Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Shah, alleging that the government was exercising authoritarian control.
Farooq said Congress workers had been exercising their right to peaceful protest when security personnel stopped their march. He further alleged that some protesters’ clothes were torn during the action.
The JKPCC leader maintained that the party would remain united in opposing what he termed the government’s “dictatorial” approach.
