SRINAGAR: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a Rs 66.52 lakh project to restore a neglected pond in Sainik Colony, with the initiative aimed at improving water conservation and reviving a traditional water body in the city.
Jammu South MLA Narinder Singh laid the foundation stone for the project at Sector-F, near the Railway Crossing in Sainik Colony, Ward No. 70, under the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) Campaign 2026.
The pond is currently in a dilapidated condition, with weeds, silt, sludge and solid waste affecting its water-holding capacity and the surrounding environment.
The restoration plan includes cleaning and desilting, earthwork and re-profiling, dewatering and water management, strengthening of embankments with PCC walls and stone pitching, and construction of an RCC filtration chamber.
The project also provides for GI chain-link fencing to improve safety and prevent encroachment, surface finishing and installation of solar lighting.
Speaking at the foundation ceremony, Narinder Singh said the restoration of traditional water bodies was important for rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and ecological balance. He said the project would improve the surroundings and strengthen water conservation infrastructure in Sainik Colony.
He said development works in Sainik Colony were being undertaken with a focus on cleanliness, water conservation, roads and green spaces, adding that the restored pond could serve as a model for rejuvenating similar water bodies elsewhere in Jammu city.
The initiative forms part of the JMC’s broader “Clean Ponds, Healthy Cities” approach to restoring urban water bodies, improving water retention and recharge, and creating cleaner neighbourhoods.
The programme was attended by the JMC Joint Commissioner (Works), senior officials, former Deputy Mayor, former councillors and local residents.
