Amid restrictions, JRL leaders and activists staged a protest at Lal Chowk demanding the return of mortal remains of Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru. The protest was later foiled by the police and several persons were arrested from the spot.

The spokesman said that Memorandum asking the return of mortal remains of the duo was also sent to UN secretary general. Bhat and Guru were arrested hanged on at Tihar jail on  February 11, 1984, and February 9, 2013, respectively and buried inside the said Jail.

Those arrested today included Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Imtiyaz Ahmad Shah, professor Javed, Javed Ahmad Butt, Fayaz Ahmad Lone, Abdul Rashid Lone, Irshad Aziz, Shakir Ahmad Ahangar, Mukhtar Ahmad and Imtiyaz Ahmad Ganiee. Many women leaders and activists including Muslim Khawateen Markaz Chief Yasmin Raja, Dilshada Bano, Afroza Akhtar, Naseema Bano.  Earlier leaders and activists of JRL along with people from other walks of life including women gathered near JKLF office Maisuma and marched towards Lal Chowk. Heavy deployment of forces and restrictions were also in place.

The memorandum to António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General sent by JRL leaders Mohammad YAsin Malik, Mohammad Umar Farooq and Syedd Ali Geelani.

According to the letter, the JRL leaders on behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir have appealed to get the mortal remains of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and Mohammad Afzal Guru to give them a dignified burial they deserve.
