Reacting to the Supreme Court ruling about same sex marriages, Dr Mustafa Kamal National Conference (NC) additional general secretary Tuesday said chief minister Omar Abdullah’s remarks on the ruling have been misunderstood.

“The same sex marriages are prohibited in Islam and that it is unlawful under Islamic jurisprudence. As far as we are concerned, we are bound by the Islamic laws and that the same sex marriages are a sin,” Kamal told KNS.

He further clarified that Omar’s remarks on the apex court ruling were misunderstood as he (Omar) had only mentioned the same for other communities and not for the Muslims. “There are people of other faiths living in the country and Omar had mentioned only about them. Islamic laws can’t be applied to Non Muslims in the country. It is for them to decide whether the Supreme Court judgment is correct or not,” Kamal told KNS.
