District Development Commissioner, Budgam, Tariq Hussain Ganaie today said that Kanihama village in Budgam is being developed as Handloom Village.

Among others, the meeting was attended by JD Planning, DD Tourism, AD Handicrafts, AD Handloom, BDO SK Pora, Executive Engineers of PDD, PHE, R&B and other concerned.

The DDC said that the Ministry of Textiles has approved the development of Kanihama as Handloom Village for being the traditional seat of Pashmina and Kani shawl weaving. He said that the village is convenient and suitable place for having around 250 Handloom weaver households besides being home to 500 Crewel and Sozni artisans, famous for their embroidery works.

At the outset, DDC exhorted upon officers of concerned departments including RDD, R&B, PHE, PDD, Tourism and Irrigation. He asked for submission of work estimates by 24th December.

The DDC said that development of Kanihama as Handloom Village will not only promote the craft and boost economy of the area but will also become sought after tourist attraction.

He said that all facilities including looms, handlooms and handicrafts showrooms besides training in latest designs will be available in the village.

The works to be carried out under the project will include repair and construction of inner village roads, drinking water and toilet facilities, construction of 30 work-sheds, 20 looms, parks, display of publicity hoarding boards, signage, installation of solar and street lights, beautification of surroundings and creation of tourist attraction points.  craft demo will also be organised in the village.

Later, the DDC chaired another meeting to review the functioning of Self Help Groups in the district. Stressing on the strengthening of SHGs, he directed the concerned to ensure implementation of 30% works quota allotment to these groups.
