Kashmir Chamber Urges Immediate Action Over Srinagar Airport Flight Disruptions

SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has voiced serious concerns over the widespread flight disruptions at Srinagar International Airport over the past three days. The chaos, caused by the Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) failure to install an upgraded Instrument Landing System (ILS), has led to numerous cancellations, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

The absence of the promised ILS, which facilitates safe flight operations during low visibility, has turned inclement weather into a recurring obstacle to the airport’s functionality. This has resulted in significant travel disruptions for various groups, including international tourists, Umrah pilgrims, business travellers, students, and patients seeking medical treatment. Many travellers have missed connecting flights at major hubs, compounding their financial and logistical challenges.

KCCI expressed frustration over the preventable nature of the crisis, highlighting its long-standing calls for upgraded navigation infrastructure at the airport. Despite repeated assurances and missed deadlines by the AAI, Srinagar International Airport continues to operate with outdated systems, leaving air connectivity at the mercy of adverse weather conditions.

The ripple effects of these disruptions have been particularly harsh on the region’s economy. The tourism sector, already reeling from global challenges, has faced significant losses during what should be a peak travel period. Business travellers have missed vital meetings, while local businesses have incurred financial setbacks due to delayed shipments and travel cancellations.

KCCI has demanded immediate action from the AAI to install the promised ILS and upgrade the airport’s infrastructure to meet international standards. The Chamber emphasised that the continued neglect of Srinagar International Airport is unacceptable for a region that serves as a major tourist and business destination.
