SRINAGAR: Protest demonstrations and candlelight marches were held in many parts of Kashmir against the killing of Puran Krishan Bhat in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday.

An official handout reads that protests cum candle marches were held in many districts including Srinagar, Kupwara, Bandipora, and Shopian to condemn the killing.

In Kupwara, the Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Doifode Sagar Dattatray,  Vice Chairman,  District Development Council,  Kupwara, Haji Farooq Ahmad Mir,  Chairman Municipal Council Kupwara,  Riyaz Ahmad Mir; president Traders Federation Kupwara, Showkat Masoodi,  District President BJP, Abdul Rehman, president Bus Stand Kupwara Mohammad Shafi Mir , MC councilors, PRIs and  people participated in the rally, reads the statement issued by DIPR.

Meanwhile, various Civil Society groups of Srinagar on Sunday lodged protest against the killing of Kashmiri Pandit.

In a tweet, Srinagar district administration said, “Various Civil Society groups of Srinagar lodged protest at Lal Chowk against Killing of Shri Puran Krishan Bhat in Shopian yesterday.People from all walks of life participated in peaceful candle March, expressed solidarity with the family of the deceased.”

Hurriyat Conference (M) also expressed shock and grief over the killing of Kashmiri pandit community member.

In a statement, the Hurriyat (M) denounced the killing and said that every single life lost in this manner is very painful adding that it extends condolences to the bereaved family and expressed solidarity with them in this hour of great sorrow.

Kashmir’s grand mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, while condemning the killing, said, “Islam doesn’t allow killing of any innocent. The killing should be thoroughly investigated. Those guilty should be punished.”

Karwan-e-Islami patron Alama Sheikh Ghulam Rasool Hami termed the killing as an “inhuman act”. “Islam doesn’t support such killings. Kashmir is a land of Sufis and Reshis. They never supported or justified innocent killings. We as a collective and responsible society strongly condemn the incident,” well-known cleric Hami said.
