Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) has hailed the appointment of Basharat Peer as the Opinion Editor of New York Times (NYT).

In a meeting of the Guild that was called here Tuesday, the media body felt that it was a proud moment for the Kashmir Media Corps that the talent and the capability of Basharat Peer was acknowledged by one of the pioneer media organisations of the world.

Peer is the author of Curfewed Nights and was frequently writing for NYT and other global media organizations. Curfewed Nights is considered to be the first Kashmiri narrative of the Kashmir conflict.

Basharat, 39, started his journalistic career in 2000 with a web portal. He graduated from Columbia University and started writing for leading publications like Guardian and other prestigious publications.

Guild wishes Peer well in his new assignment.

Meanwhile, KEG also nominated a four member committee that was mandated to take up various issues faced by the media organisations.

KEG also criticized the continuous ban imposed by the government on ‘Kashmir Reader’. The media body reiterated that the ban should be immediately revoked.
