SRINAGAR: The Mumbai police have arrested a Kashmiri for threatening a young girl with rape and murder. He was traced on basis of technical intelligence, arrested, and flown to Mumbai, reports appearing in the media said.

He has been identified as Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Budgam.

Details revealed that the Mumbai teenager, who has more than one lakh Facebook followers had posted “controversial comments on the killing of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal”, the Udaipur tailor on July 1. The post attracted 14 lakh views. Since she had put her cell number on social media, in reaction to the post, she got threats of life and rape.

The 15-year-old girl petitioned the police and the VP Road police took the threats seriously. They registered an FIR on July 2. Apart putting the girl in police protection, they flew some cops to Srinagar who traced the 30-year-old man.

DCP Neelotpal told reporters that they did the technical analysis of the phone numbers from which threats were being issued. They found one of the numbers linked to a matrimonial website. Through the website, sleuths gathered details of the accused, Faiyaz Ahmed Bhat. Eventually the man was located in Budgam and arrested. “We brought him to Mumbai on Sunday and produced him before a magistrate court,” Neelotpal was quoted as saying. Bhat has been remanded in police custody for three days.

A divorcee, police said, Bhat has his profile on five different matrimonial websites. He lacks a criminal history, police said.
