Srinagar

The media fraternity of Kashmir on Saturday boycotted the January 26, function at SK stadium Srinagar after few media men, mostly seniors were restricted to cover the event.

Reports said that journalists belonging to various organisations have boycotted to cover the event, and are planning to protest at Kashmir Press Club against the incident.

Dozens of photojournalists who were restricted told Kashmir Life that the security personnel at the entry told some senior journalists that they cannot cover the function, triggering journalists to boycott the event as a mark of protest.

Meanwhile, Peoples Conference chairperson Sajjad Lone condemned the attitude of the administration towards the press.

“Condemn the attitude of the current administration towards the press. They boycotted Republic Day function in Srinagar after some of their colleagues were stopped. This is the first time ever it has happened. @jandkgovernor needs to take serious note,” lone wrote on his twitter handle.

In another tweet, he wrote: “You can’t define journalism and journalists through the security prism. And stop people on the basis of adverse reports. Whatever falls in the ambit of civil as in civilian— is and has to be accepted. Civilian space is a sacred territory in Kashmir. Please don’t constrict it.”
