Kashmir News Photographer, Nissar Ahmad is No More


SRINAGAR: Nissar Ahmad, a senior photojournalist known for his compelling coverage of the Kashmir turmoil, passed away today after a prolonged battle with a life-threatening illness. Ahmad had undergone a major operation two years ago for cancer management but continued to work diligently for The Hindu until his health deteriorated recently.

One of his colleagues said he had been admitted to SMHS hospital on Tuesday morning. He breathed his last at SMHS Hospital in the afternoon today. His family is busy taking his mortal remains to their Natipora home and the funerals are expected later in the day.

Ahmad’s journey in photography began as a tourist photographer, capturing Kashmir’s serene landscapes and vibrant culture. His passion for the craft eventually led him to pursue journalism, where his talent was quickly recognised. He initially worked for the Kashmir Times and would also freelance for various local newspapers. His dedication and eye for impactful imagery caught the attention of The Hindu, which he joined in the early 2000s.

Throughout his career, Ahmad’s work stood out for its depth and sensitivity, particularly his coverage of the militancy in Kashmir. His photographs documented the turmoil and told the human stories behind the headlines, earning him respect and admiration from colleagues and readers alike.

Despite his illness, Ahmad remained committed to his profession, regularly attending the office and contributing until his condition worsened. His perseverance and dedication to photojournalism were evident to all who knew him.

Ahmad is survived by his two sons, one of whom has followed in his father’s footsteps and is also a photographer. The loss of Nissar Ahmad is deeply felt in the journalism community, where his legacy as a fearless and compassionate photojournalist will continue to inspire future generations.
