Kashmir plains received season’s first snowfall

Kashmir’s  plains received the season’s first snowfall as most areas in the Valley and its plains received overnight snow and rains that provided much-needed relief from the intense cold on Monday overnight.

Srinagar recorded snow and rains equivalent to rainfall 3.5 cm, an official of the Meteorological Department said.

Gulmarg, the star attraction for tourists visiting the Valley during winter, recorded about 2 feet of snow overnight Monday, the official said.
The official said around two feet of snow was recorded in the peripheral areas of the resort including in the areas of Khilanmarg, Kongdoori and Apperwath.

The other areas which witnessed snowfall included Ganderbal, Keran, Machil, Karnah, Gurez, Shopian, Sonamarg and Amarnath cave along with surrounding areas.

The famous health resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir, which serves as a base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, received 2 ft snow, including the Qazigund and Kokernag areas of south Kashmir, also received 13 cm snow, the official said, adding that the resort recorded a low of 0.2 degrees Celsius.
A prolonged dry spell ended yesterday as high altitude areas, including Gulmarg, experienced snow while most of the plains were lashed by rains.
MET department has predicted more rains and snow for today and tomorrow, “there will be more rains and snow in coming two days,” Met official said.

The Srinagar Jammu highway was also closed for vehicular traffic on Monday as a precautionary measure due to continuous snowfall and rains.

 Traffic authorities have also suspended traffic on Mughal road, connecting the twin Poonch and Rajouri districts a precautionary measure in view of the weather forecast predicting moderate to heavy snowfall for more two days.
