All shops and other business establishments are shut in Srinagar and other districts of the Valley while traffic is off the roads. In view of the strike call, police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in Srinagar mostly in downtown areas of the city.

The shutdown call was given by JRL against the Wani and his associates’ killing. Expressing deep grief over the “martyrdom of freedom fighter” Manan Wani and his associate Ashiq Hussain Zargar, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Mohammad Yasin Malik has urged people to observe a complete shutdown today to pay homage to slain militants.

A Ph.D. scholar-turned militant Manan Wani and his associate Ashiq Hussain Zargar was killed in a gunfight with government forces in north Kashmir’s Handwara on Thursday.

“It is an immense tragedy of Kashmir that our budding youth, professors and engineers, intellectuals and writers like Manan, the future of our nation, are paying the price of the greed and follies of those who since 1947 misled the people through deceit and in violation of international principles of humanity and justice,” the spokesman quoted leadership as saying.
