A complete shutdown is being observed across Kashmir following the Joint Resistance Leadership valley wide shutdown call against the killing of scholar rebel Sabzar Sofi and his associate Asif Ahmad Gojri.

All shops and other business establishments are shut in Srinagar and other districts of the Valley while traffic is off the roads. In view of the strike call, police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in Srinagar mostly in downtown areas of the city.

The shutdown call was given by JRL against the Sofi and his associates’ killing. Expressing deep grief over the killing of Sabzar and his associate Asif Ahmad Gojri, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Mohammad Yasin Malik has urged people to observe a complete shutdown today to pay homage to slain militants.

A Ph.D. scholar-turned militant Sabzar Sofi and his associate Asif Ahmad Gojri, was killed in a gunfight with government forces in Nowgam area of Srinagar on Wednesday.

The authorities had suspended train services between Banihal and Baramulla while restrictions on public movement were imposed in old parts of Srinagar.

Resistance leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq have been placed under house arrest while Yasin Malik is in police custody.
